Clackamas County Sheriff's Office patrol personnel report that at approximately 12:48 a.m on Friday, July 27, 2007, deputies were dispatched to a reported non-injury hit-and-run crash at 15828 SE McLoughlin Blvd in Clackamas County.
When they arrived, deputies found an unoccupied 1987 Honda Civic with significant front-end damage in a commercial parking lot.
At approximately 1:08 a.m., Clackamas County dispatch advised deputies of a 911 call reporting that this 1987 Honda Civic had just been stolen in a "carjacking" incident from the same parking lot.
The reporting party -- identified as Earl Joey Gilliam (DOB 6/89) -- was calling from his apartment at 15534 SE East Ave. He reported that he and his passenger, Caleb Jason Croteau (DOB 3/89), had attempted to pay for their order at the Taco Bell near Hwy 99E at SE Vineyard Ave.
Gilliam further explained that when his ATM card was rejected, they left Taco Bell to get cash. He reported that he and Croteau then approached two unidentified male subjects in the immediate area whom Gilliam and Croteau thought they knew.
Gilliam went on to explain that his reported passenger (Croteau) was struck with a baseball bat by one of these two unidentified suspects -- who then reportedly commandeered Gilliam's automobile. Gilliam described the suspects fleeing the scene immediately with the stolen automobile after the baseball-bat assault.
However, while being interviewed by deputies, Gilliam soon confessed to driving the vehicle himself when he hit a speed bump in the parking lot -- causing him to overcorrect, pulling the steering wheel to the left and colliding with a tree.
Gilliam went on to factually explain that, after the crash, he and his severely injured passenger Croteau walked back to their apartment approximately 1/2-mile away from the crash scene.
While walking to the apartment, Gilliam passed an open gas station, but did not attempt to obtain any medical assistance for his seriously injured passenger/companion Caleb Croteau.
As of 6:30 a.m. today, Croteau was listed in critical condition at OHSU.
Earl Joe Gilliam was arrested at his residence, then lodged at Clackamas County Jail on the following charges:
Arraignment for this matter is scheduled for 3:00 a.m. today (Friday, July 27th, 2007) in Clackamas County Circuit Court in Oregon City.
